Up Naro Moru, Down Naro Moru – The Summit Awakening
This four-day trek offers the perfect blend of challenge and beauty, taking you up Africa’s second-highest mountain—Mount Kenya—via the Naro Moru Route. From the misty rainforest to the alpine heights of Point Lenana, the journey rewards the bold with stunning high-altitude landscapes, glowing glaciers, and silent sunrise moments few ever witness. It’s a raw, unfiltered connection with Africa’s untamed heights—one step closer to the sky.
Leave Nairobi behind as you head north, passing rolling plantations of coffee and pineapple en route to the foothills of Mount Kenya. After lunch at the Naro Moru Gate, begin your forest trek to Met Station. The three-hour walk winds through bamboo and montane forest—your first taste of the wild. Dinner and overnight at the mountain cabins nestled among giant trees.
Today’s trek ascends through the vertical bog and grassy tussocks of the high moorland, with the snow-dusted Batian and Nelion peaks rising dramatically ahead. Walk 14km over 5–6 hours into the wild heart of the mountain. Arrive at Mackinder’s Camp in the hauntingly beautiful Teleki Valley, where alpine silence and jagged peaks welcome you.
At 2:00 a.m., wake for the final ascent. Hot tea and anticipation fuel your pre-dawn summit attempt to Point Lenana (4,985m). The climb via Austrian Hut is steep and surreal—scree underfoot, stars above. Reach the summit at sunrise to witness the face of Nelion lit gold by the first light. Descend back to Mackinder’s for breakfast, then continue down to Met Station for a well-earned rest after a day that will live in your memory forever.
After breakfast, complete your descent through the forest and return to Naro Moru Gate. Your vehicle awaits to take you back to Nairobi, legs tired, heart full, and your spirit forever shaped by the majesty of Mount Kenya.
